Definition of Gram
A gram is a metric unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a kilogram. In cooking, grams are used to weigh ingredients directly instead of measuring them by volume.
That matters because grams describe how heavy an ingredient is, not how much space it takes up. A recipe that calls for 100 grams of flour means the same weight every time, even if the flour was scooped, sifted, or packed differently.
In practical kitchen use, grams are most common on digital scales, product labels, and recipes written in metric format. They are especially useful in baking, where small changes in flour, butter, sugar, or water can change texture and consistency.
